How did you get that idea?

Friday, May 29th, 2009

The idea of this blog is to focus on ideas — how we get them, how we recognize them, how we test them, how we put them to use.  Often, the “we” will be visual artists, writers, musicians and other “creatives” whom I know personally and can talk to about that perennial question, “How did you get that idea?”  But the “we” can also be people I read about (fictional or real) and anyone else who strikes me as living in the world of ideas and dreams and inspiration.

So, to start …

Susan:  And just how did you get that idea?

Me:  I like to write, and I’d been thinking for a long time about augmenting my website, which features my paintings and some supporting text, with a blog where I could write more extensively. But since my blog would not exactly be the world’s first, what would distinguish it, give it some content and context beyond the merely personal?  I decided that instead of making it about me, it would focus on other people.

Susan:  That sounds really selfless.

Me:  No, it’s actually kind of selfish.  I am writing what I would want to read.  I like to find out what people do — what people make — and why and how.

Susan:  What do you get out of knowing those things?

Me:  A greater sense of all that is possible.
